A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding in Ukraine as the escalating violence puts millions of lives at risk. In just four days, more than 500,000 people have fled the country and are now refugees.
After eight years of conflict, Ukraine’s humanitarian needs are already significant, with nearly 3 million people in need of humanitarian support. Tragically, this intensified conflict is expected to impact as many as 18 million people through civilian casualties, mass displacement and the destruction of homes, livelihoods, and infrastructure — not to mention the fear and uncertainty people across the country are facing with every minute that violence continues.
CARE will be supporting our local partner in Ukraine, People in Need, to distribute food, water, hygiene kits and money for supplies. People in Need is one of the largest aid organisations in Eastern Europe and has been providing humanitarian assistance in Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict in 2014.
We will also be working with local partners in neighbouring countries to provide support to the families who have fled Ukraine for safety. Moldova, Poland and Romania are seeing a massive refugee influx, with lines at their borders stretching for more than 10 kilometres. Most of the people fleeing are women and children – many arriving on foot, carrying young children through freezing temperatures.
